For resilient forests of tomorrow in Europe
Ecobase was founded in Estonia in 2021 by Jaan Sepping with a clear goal: to unlock the power of carbon finance for European landowners and help forests reach their full climate potential by creating more forests and managing existing ones in a climate-friendly way.
At the time, certified forest carbon projects had been running at scale for over a decade across continents like North and South America and Southeast Asia. But in Europe, very little had been done. The region’s land ownership is more scattered and forest operations more costly, making global carbon project models impractical. Europe had the legal, ecological, and institutional foundations for strong carbon markets, but the project structures in use elsewhere simply didn’t fit. Most required large-scale land acquisitions or rental contracts. In contrast, European forests are owned and cared for by long-term stewards such as municipalities, agencies, estates, and families.
Even when motivated to act, these landowners often face high costs, complex rules, and limited support. Certified carbon standards like Verra come with significant fixed costs and are typically designed for large single-owner projects. That model works in regions with vast consolidated lands, but not in Europe. The only way to make these projects viable here is to aggregate many landowners across different countries. This is exactly what Ecobase does.
Since then, Ecobase has raised over €5 million to grow our work across Europe. We have registered the first pan-European afforestation and reforestation project under Verra to successfully issue credits. In 2025, we reached a major milestone when our first credits were sold to Rubicon Carbon, a global portfolio manager working with clients like Microsoft.
Today, we support landowners through every stage of the carbon journey. From project design and registration to monitoring, third-party audits, and credit sales, we manage the complexity so landowners can focus on their forests and their future.

Grow with us
At Ecobase, we’re building practical climate solutions rooted in forestry, science, and partnership. Our work supports landowners across Europe in turning their forests into lasting sources of climate and economic value.
We are a team of curious thinkers, always ready to be hands-on and strong believers in collaboration. We value diverse perspectives, honest conversations, and people who take initiative — whether in the forest, behind a dataset or helping bring forest carbon to market.
If you want your work to have real-world impact, come help us build the future of forest carbon in Europe!
